Visualizing Resonance

Ever since my father explained to me what a tesla coil is, I have been fascinated with the concept of resonance (and with Tesla in general). This video is a fantastic demonstration of a sound wave resonating with salt poured on a steel plate. As the frequency is turned up, distinct and complicated shapes and patterns form. A must see.

That is really neat. What is needed to reproduce this?

The plate is probably slightly flexible sheet metal. Maybe a wooden block underneath it. The sound is made through some kind of frequency generator. It might be possible to do this with a computer and a really good pair of speakers, but I am guessing that they used real lab equipment.

After a little more reading, it looks like the plate was sitting on a speaker box. That makes much more sense.
